On Sunday we took Braeden to the zoo for Boo at the Zoo, a special celebration they do for Halloween. It was a beautiful day, in the 60s with blue skies, plenty of sun, and a light breeze to blow the leaves around. Asheboro is in an old mountain range, so the small mountains are covered with trees whose leaves are changing colors. It was a beautiful drive into the zoo, and we were among the first visitors for the day.
We went early to beat the crowds and to catch Braeden at his best. We walked through Africa first where we saw giraffes, zebras, lions, elephants, and gorillas and chimps. Braeden sat on the other side of some very thick glass from a really big gorilla who was completely occupied with his personal grooming. He also sat face-to-face (again through glass) with a much smaller chimp. The chimp was much more interested in his audience! It was clear the chimp was more interested in performing for his crowd than the gorilla had been!
When we finished the walk in Africa, we went over to North America for lunch then did the loop through that part of the zoo. The highlight there was probably the sea lions. Talk about performers! They would swoop by the 15 feet of glass walls with the bellies skimming the glass over and over. The kids and there were easily a dozen or more, were entranced! They would laugh, shout, and point each time a sea lion flew by. It was amazing to watch. I think Braeden might have enjoyed the kids' reactions even more than the sea lions.
We had a great day. I think Braeden will enjoy the zoo more when he's a little older, but we all had fun. We bought him an animal book in the visitor center to remember his trip, and we took a few pictures which I'll post as soon as I can.
